Just Desserts to Release ‘Lost in Love’ on Halloween 2010

Just Desserts, the musical duo of Tom Laverack and Larry Fessenden, is emerging on the eve of Day of the Dead with their third release in just over twenty years. Larry, best known for his film making, and more recently, film producing through Glasseye Pix, is also a talented songwriter, sax player and singer. Tom, who is best known for his  solo recordings and record label, Sojourn Records, that he co-founded with Mark Ambrosino, is a singer-songwriter and social worker. Go figure. Mark, who owns and runs his own studio, The Madhouse – the nerve center of Sojourn, engineered, produced and weathered the recording process with the duo. The end result is Just Desserts’ “second first album” coming a couple decades after the fact. What makes this the best representation of the music Larry and Tom have been making since they were mere teens in high school, is the naturally eclectic mix of musical styles and genres that they use and live inside here. Always with an eye for a tune you can sing and no apologies for having a pop sensibility , Laverack and Fessenden also take some surprising turns along the way, including the volatile yet plaintive title track ‘Lost in Love’, the haunting, cabaret-like ‘Eva’ and the country ballad ‘Elbow Room’, celebrating the sanctity of a decent drinking hole. Most of these songs have been around awhile and perhaps this is why there is a natural comfort in playing and singing these songs despite the shift in genre or style. Making this possible is a stellar collection of musicians, including Mark Ambrosino on drums (when does this guy rest), Dave Richards on electric and upright bass, and David Morgan on piano, organ and a variety of other esoteric keyed instruments. Jack Petruzelli plays some wonderful guitar on four tracks, featuring some exquisite slide on the opening song ‘Anything’.

Just Desserts released their first album ‘Sentimental War’  in 1987 and a second album, ‘Give Up The Ghost’ a decade or so later in 1999. Past members include the infamous Wharton Tiers who recorded the two previous albums and played drums on the latter, and Mark Lerner, ever tolerant and melodic on bass. ‘Lost in Love’ will be available online (digitally) and physically at Sojourn Records and Amazon.
